Hi, I’m Sarah
Host, Author, Professional Life Pivoter
I love a good plot twist, both in the stories I write and in life. I also believe that life is a draft, and you can always edit or begin again.
On This Might Be A Draft, I chat with other writers, creators, and makers about the stories we create, the plot twists we don’t see coming, the revisions we make, and how we keep going when edits are pending.
When I’m not yapping about plot twists, I’m writing them. Despite all the pivots I’ve made in life, the one thing that has stayed with me is writing. When my characters feel like real, whole people sitting next to me while I write, I know I’m on to something. You can learn more about my writing and books at sarahwyland.com.
If I’m not writing or recording a podcast episode (or at my 8-5ish marketing job) you can find me reading, hanging out with my pup, Griff, or cheering on the Volunteers. Go Vols!
Professional pivoter?
According to Merriam-Webster, a Pivoter is “a worker who grinds pivots to the proper shape for timepiece balance staffs.” In my case, it’s someone who isn’t afraid of a plot twist. Or a pivot, if you will.
I’ve tried a lot of things in life so far:
- First-generation college graduate
- Music journalist
- Marketing professional
- Barre Instructor/Personal Trainer/Barre Studio Owner
- Film school for writing and producing for television
- Running a digital marketing department for a marketing agency
- Founding team to start a new college at the University of Tennessee
- Self-published author
See? Professional pivoter. I follow my instincts and trust that the plot twists will unfold how they’re meant to. And if they don’t? Well, that’s what editing and fresh documents are for, right?

Best Writing Advice?
Just write. Outline, plot, and research if you need to, but don’t procrastinate by planning. Just write the first draft.
A Random fact about you
The TSA agent at LAX once used my bin to show the entire line “how it should be done.” My ego thrived.

ABOUT
This MIGHT BE A DRAFT
As an author, I rely on a good plot twist to propel my story forward. Turns out, plot twists in life – whether of your own making or not – are just as crucial for moving our stories along. While we can hit the delete button and revise a sentence, paragraph, or even entire chapters, life doesn’t have an undo button.
That’s why This Might Be A Draft is about: the twists and turns in art and life, the edits we make, and the revisions we live through as we work towards the elusive final draft.
Welcome to This Might Be A Draft.
Plot twists welcome.
Edits to come.
